Colorful coral reef underwater

The Puerto Morelos reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, and it is only a few minutes’ drive from Casa Chanty. Coral grows unusually close to shore here, which makes it one of the easiest places in the Caribbean to snorkel a healthy reef without a long boat trip.

Why snorkel in Puerto Morelos?

  • The reef is a protected national park, and its coral is among the best preserved on this coast.
  • The barrier reef is only about 400 meters from shore, so boat rides are short.
  • You can expect sergeant majors, parrotfish and barracuda, and sometimes rays and sea turtles.
  • It is much quieter than the big tourist reefs farther south.

How snorkeling here works

Most visitors snorkel the barrier reef on a guided boat tour from Puerto Morelos. The boat takes about ten minutes to reach the reef, and the guide leads the group in the water. Tours run from a couple of hours to a half day, and some small-group options exist if you prefer a quieter experience.

  • National park fee: a reef fee is charged per person, often paid in cash on site. Check whether it is included in the tour price.
  • Life jackets: tours in the park require life jackets under federal regulations.
  • Guide: the barrier reef requires a guided boat tour. Ask your operator about the rules for the shallow reef closer to the beach, which can differ.

Rules that protect the reef

  • Never touch, stand on or kick the coral.
  • Many tours do not allow any sunscreen in the water, so wear a UV shirt or rash guard instead.
  • You may be asked to shower before entering the water.
  • Don’t chase or feed sea life, and keep your distance from turtles.

What to bring

  • A UV shirt, swimsuit, hat and towel
  • Cash in pesos for the park fee, tips and snacks
  • Your own mask and snorkel if you prefer a perfect fit, although tours include gear
  • A change of clothes for afterward

Best time to go

Morning tours usually offer calm water and good light. Trips can be canceled for bad weather, so keep your plans flexible. Sargassum varies from year to year, and you can follow our seaweed update for current conditions.

Make a day of it

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

Not necessarily. Life jackets and guides make it accessible, but tell your operator if you are a weak swimmer or traveling with children, and ask about minimum ages when you book.

How far is the reef from Casa Chanty?

Puerto Morelos is about six minutes north by car, and the reef is a short boat ride from the town.
