The Riviera Maya is one of the easiest places in the Caribbean to visit with children. The water is warm, the beaches are gentle, and there are parks, zoos and cenotes within a short drive. Here is how to plan a family trip that keeps everyone happy, from toddlers to teenagers.
Start with the right base
Traveling with kids is easier when you have space, a kitchen and a place to retreat. A private villa lets you cook breakfast on your schedule, keep snacks at hand and let little ones nap while others play. Casa Chanty offers a private beachfront with direct access to the sea, a pool and 24-hour security, in a quiet residential area between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. We compare this with the resort alternative in why we stopped booking all-inclusive resorts.
The best parks for families
- Xcaret: a wide mix of nature, culture and activities that works for different ages in the same group.
- Xel-Há: a relaxed, water-based day with snorkeling and floating, in an all-inclusive format for food and drinks.
- Crococun Zoo: a guided, hands-on animal visit of about an hour, close to Puerto Morelos.
- Xplor: best for older children and teens who like ziplines and adventure.
Always check each park’s age, height and swimming requirements on its official website before booking. Our Xcaret vs Xplor vs Xel-Há comparison helps you choose.
Beaches and snorkeling for kids
Playa del Secreto has calm, shallow water and almost no crowds, which is ideal for families. Puerto Morelos, just six minutes north, has a reef close to shore that is good for first-time snorkelers. Always supervise children in the water and use life vests for weaker swimmers.
From June through September, nesting sea turtles come ashore on our beach at night, which is a memorable experience for children if you keep a respectful distance. Read more in our post on turtle season at Playa del Secreto.
Cenotes with children
Open-air cenotes with wooden platforms, such as Cenote Mojarras, are a good first choice for families. Save the cave swims for older children, and bring water shoes and a towel. See our guide to the best cenotes near Playa del Secreto.
A sample 5-day family plan
- Day 1: Arrive, grocery run, beach and pool at the villa.
- Day 2: Morning snorkel and lunch in Puerto Morelos, afternoon rest.
- Day 3: A big park day (Xcaret or Xel-Há).
- Day 4: Slow beach day, with a cenote in the afternoon.
- Day 5: Crococun Zoo in the morning, a chef dinner or a family barbecue at the villa.
Practical tips for families
- Plan outings in the morning and rest in the hottest hours of the afternoon.
- Bring reef-safe or biodegradable sunscreen, hats and plenty of water.
- Don’t schedule park days back to back, because children tire fast in the heat.
- Ask us about private chef dinners with notice, so the grown-ups get a night off from cooking.
