Playa del Carmen in 2026: Is It Still Worth Visiting?

Is Playa del Carmen still a good choice for a vacation in 2026? Is seaweed still a problem? Is it better to stay in Playa del Carmen or just outside the city? And what can you do if the sea isn’t perfect one day?

These are probably some of the questions we hear most often from travelers planning a vacation in the Riviera Maya.

So we decided to answer them simply and honestly — without hiding the less predictable aspects, but also without forgetting why the Riviera Maya continues to be one of the most extraordinary destinations in Mexico.

The reality is that Playa del Carmen and the entire Riviera Maya are going through an interesting period. Sargassum continues to be a natural phenomenon that is difficult to predict, the 2026 summer season has seen more moderate tourism numbers than previous years, and some periods can therefore offer particularly good value for money.

But there is something else that many travelers only discover once they arrive:

The Riviera Maya is not just about the beach.

And where you choose to stay can make a huge difference to your vacation experience.

1. Is there still sargassum in Playa del Carmen?

Yes, sargassum is still a phenomenon to take into consideration, especially during the months when it is most common. But that does not mean that every beach is covered with seaweed every day.

The situation can change quickly depending on currents, wind and sea conditions. During 2026, sargassum has remained one of the main concerns for tourism along the Mexican Caribbean, and local authorities have increased monitoring, collection and containment efforts.

But there is something important to understand:

Not all beaches are the same.

The amount of sargassum can vary considerably from one beach to another and even from one day to the next.

That is why, when choosing your accommodation, we recommend looking beyond simply asking how far it is from Playa del Carmen.

Look at where the property is actually located and what kind of beach you have access to.

2. What if I want a beach vacation without the crowds?

This is one of the reasons many of our guests choose Casa Chanty.

Casa Chanty is not located in the busy center of Playa del Carmen.

It is a beachfront home with a private beach, located in a strategic position in the Riviera Maya, between Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.

The experience here is completely different.

You don’t have to drive to reach the beach.

You don’t have to walk through crowded tourist areas.

You don’t have to look for a place to put your towel.

You wake up, step outside and have the Caribbean Sea right in front of you.

The beach is private, peaceful and much more secluded than the large urban beaches.

And because the area is less developed, the experience is much closer to what many travelers imagine when they dream of the Riviera Maya:

Sea, nature, peace and privacy.

3. Does having a private beach mean there will never be sargassum?

No — and we prefer to be honest about that.

No one can guarantee that a Caribbean beach will always be completely free of sargassum.

Sargassum is a natural phenomenon and conditions can change quickly.

What we can offer is something different: a peaceful location and a private beach, away from the crowds and busy atmosphere of the city beaches.

And when the sea isn’t at its best, the Riviera Maya offers so many alternatives that one day without perfect beach conditions certainly doesn’t have to mean a wasted vacation.

That is one of the great advantages of staying here.

4. What can we do if the sea isn’t perfect one day?

This is probably the most important question.

The answer is: a lot.

You can explore the spectacular cenotes of the Riviera Maya, go snorkeling or diving, visit Cozumel, spend the day in Puerto Morelos, explore Playa del Carmen, discover the jungle or visit fascinating Mayan archaeological sites.

You can enjoy local Mexican cuisine, visit markets and small towns, go shopping or simply relax by the pool and enjoy the peace and privacy of Casa Chanty.

And then there are all the incredible experiences available in nature.

Some of the experiences you can enjoy during your stay include:

  • Snorkeling and diving
  • Coral reef excursions
  • Cenotes and freshwater caves
  • Akumal and its marine life
  • Excursions to Cozumel
  • Jungle and nature reserves
  • Mayan archaeological sites
  • Boat excursions
  • Seasonal whale shark experiences
  • Mexican cuisine and local restaurants
  • Playa del Carmen and Fifth Avenue
  • Sunsets, walks and completely relaxing days

In other words, the beach is only one part of the Riviera Maya.

5. Is Casa Chanty too far from Playa del Carmen?

No — and this is actually one of the things we love most about our location.

You are far enough away from the crowds to enjoy privacy, peace and quiet, while still being close enough to easily reach the Riviera Maya’s main destinations.

Casa Chanty is strategically located between:

Cancún → Puerto Morelos → Casa Chanty → Playa del Carmen

This means that during your vacation you can easily combine completely relaxing days with days dedicated to exploring.

One day you can spend the entire day on your private beach.

The next day you can visit Playa del Carmen.

Another day you can explore Puerto Morelos.

Another day you can discover a cenote.

And you can easily reach Cancún and many of the Riviera Maya’s major attractions as well.

6. Is the area peaceful and secure?

One of the things our guests appreciate most is the feeling of peace and tranquility.

Casa Chanty is located in a private residential area, away from traffic and the busy atmosphere of the main tourist areas.

The property also has 24-hour security.

This allows families and groups to enjoy their vacation with a level of privacy and peace of mind that can be difficult to find in crowded tourist areas.

7. Why choose a beachfront home instead of a hotel?

This really comes down to the experience.

In a hotel, you have a room.

At Casa Chanty, you can have a real home by the sea.

More space, privacy, a pool, a kitchen, outdoor areas, the possibility of spending time together as a group and, most importantly, the freedom to enjoy your vacation at your own pace.

For families and larger groups, this can make an enormous difference.

You don’t need to book separate rooms.

You don’t have to meet in a hotel lobby.

You don’t have to share the pool with hundreds of other guests.

You have your own space and your own rhythm.

And above all, you have something very few properties can offer:

The Caribbean Sea right in front of your home.

8. Doesn’t a beachfront home cost a fortune?

This is often one of the biggest surprises for our guests.

A truly beachfront property with a private beach, pool and generous living spaces can offer exceptional value, especially when the cost is shared among a large family or group of friends.

And that is exactly the idea behind Casa Chanty.

We don’t want to be an inaccessible luxury resort.

We want to offer travelers the opportunity to experience the Riviera Maya from a real beachfront home, with space, privacy and amenities, at a price that makes sense — especially for families and groups.

9. So, is it better to stay in Playa del Carmen or outside the city?

It depends on the kind of vacation you are looking for.

If you want to walk out of your door and immediately find restaurants, shops, nightlife and the energy of a busy tourist destination, then staying in central Playa del Carmen may be the right choice for you.

But if you are looking for:

Beach + privacy + nature + peace + security + a strategic location

then it is worth looking just outside the city as well.

And this is where Casa Chanty offers something very special.

You can enjoy the peace of a private beachfront home while still being close enough to explore Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Cancún and the rest of the Riviera Maya.

The best of both worlds.

10. What is the real advantage of Casa Chanty?

Perhaps it is difficult to describe it with just one word.

But if we had to choose one, it would be:

FREEDOM

Freedom to wake up and have breakfast overlooking the sea.

Freedom to spend an entire day on your private beach.

Freedom to enjoy the pool.

Freedom to prepare dinner and spend time together.

Freedom to explore Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos or Cancún whenever you feel like it.

Freedom to discover cenotes, jungle, coral reefs and Mayan archaeological sites.

And, after a day of exploring, freedom to come home, close the gate and find yourself once again in your own little private Caribbean oasis.

Casa Chanty – Playa del Secreto

If you are looking for a beachfront home in the Riviera Maya for a family vacation or a trip with friends, Casa Chanty is an ideal choice for travelers who want to combine Caribbean beaches, privacy, tranquility and the freedom to explore the entire Riviera Maya.

Strategically located between Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.

Yours is already right in front of your home.
